It would be great if we had the same capability to have custom shape / polygon files within power bi map visualizations similar to what is avaliable in Power Maps!

Hi Jim - that's a great suggestion; I've heard it before so I'm sure there are others who'd benefit as well. Please submit it on our Suggestions forum here: https://support.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi
Give us as much detail about your scenario as you can, please, as that will help us build the feature as you need it!
Thanks

It's a shame that Power BI's new 'Shape Map' feature does not actually allow for shape files. Even Microsoft reps have been telling me the current release would allow for Shape files, when in fact, they are just map layers.
Power BI's inability to allow for Shape Files is one of the reasons why large organisations are not using Power BI. Just because nobody asks for it on the Ideas forum doesn't mean that nobody wants it. As BI and Innovation Manager, I speak on behalf of my organisation of 10000 people, of which over 100 users are using Tableau & Click because Power BI does not allow for analysis using shape files. Many other government organisations I have spoken to are in the same boat.
The lack of 1 functionality is preventing the adoption of Power BI to the masses. Be quick before they are locked in to Tableau or Qlik.
Hope someone in the Power BI Team hears this.
