I am new to Power BI and trying to figure out how to add a series of images for a variety of locations. I have added the URL to which my images are located (eg. desktop folder) and highlighted the column as image URL. However I am unable to see the image when i am selecting a specific

According to your description, you have highlighted the column as ‘image URL’, like this:
So, I think the problem is your image URL.

I tried the following two methods -
1) The image on a local path (ie. my desk top)
2) Posting the image on a SharePoint site (to which I have access as well)
Unfortunately both did not work. The image did not show up. I did indicate Under the 'modelling tab' as Image URL.

1. It's right that 'The image on a local path ' doesn't work, because we can't use local path.
2. We also can't use the URL of SharePoint.

If you want to show the local images in a report, do like this:
