The goal of the challenge is to celebrate the data visualization legacy of W.E.B Du Bois by re-creating the visualizations from the 1900 Paris Exposition using modern tools.
The fun thing about re-creating this with a modern data visualization tool is building in interactivity. Mouse over the circles in the legend to see percentage differences, or click to highlight each occupation group. I've also added accessibility features to the report.
I also included an image of the original 1900 visualization for comparison in the "Original" section. Fonts and methods are documented in the "About" section.
As displayed at the Paris exposition, the Du Bois visualizations were large format, 22x28 inch posters. I have duplicated that layout in this report by setting the canvas to 1584x2016 pixels. I found this also looks good on tablets in portrait mode.
Let me know what you think, or if you want to know more about W.E.B. Du Bois or the Data Visualization Society!
