Connections not showing for external user

Hi!

I am working for a customer in their tenant. I log in to their tenant as an external user. Which is kind of a mess to get to the right the tenant sometimes.

Normally I would make everything in a notebook, but I need to make use of an onpremise data gateway so I chose to use a Data Pipeline.

The account that owns the onpremise data gateway has made a connection to SQL server database and shared it with my account. And I can see the connection in the Manage connections and gateways page from the Settings menu. So far so good.

When I try to create a copy activity I cannot choose the connection. All the connections listed are the ones from my own tenant. I know I have the connections as previously stated. How can I solve this?

It didn't help. I have started a support ticket with Microsoft. I will post the solution here.

Hi cdj,

Thank you for the update.

Based on my understanding, please follow the steps outlined below, which may help resolve the issue:

  1. In the top-right profile menu, select Switch Directory to ensure that you are fully operating within the customer’s tenant.
  2. The gateway owner must share the connection with your guest account by granting the Can Use permission. Additionally, please ensure that your account is assigned the Contributor role within the workspace.
  3. Navigate to Manage Connections and copy the connection name. In your pipeline, manually paste this name into the connection field during dataset creation. This approach often helps bypass UI limitations encountered by guest users.

If you find our response helpful, kindly mark it as the accepted solution and provide kudos. This will assist other community members facing similar issues.

Thank you.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Thank you for replying. I tried all those. Sometimes they do work. Sometimes it works just by clicking the refresh button.

I also tried using a different browser, even using a different computer.

Hi @cdj ,

Problems are usually caused by insufficient privileges or incorrect tenant switching. Resolve the problem by following these steps:

  • Force log out and log back in to the customer tenant.
  • Check the connection and gateway sharing permissions.
  • Manually enter a connection name or use a service principal.
  • Assign the necessary Azure roles.

Best Regards,
Adamk Kong
