Extra Blank column when table of contents view is used in notebook

Has anyone else experienced this new gui breakage in notebooks. When i turn on table of contents in a notebook the toc appears, but a 2nd empty column appears to the right, this takes up considerable screen space, the column is note resizeable, and disapears if copilot is used but comes back with the toc. this is new in the last 2 weeks.

Other users have reported the same problem. Specifically, when the ToC is enabled, the notebook layout mistakenly adds a non-functional blank column on the right side of the interface. This has been confirmed as a recent change and is not an isolated case

Hi @jajumonville,

Thanks for your detailed follow-up. Based on recent reports, this behaviour where a blank, non-functional column appears on the right side of the notebook interface when the Table of Contents (ToC) is enabled has been observed by multiple users and appears to be a result of a recent update to the notebook environment. So, you're right; this does not appear to be tenant-specific and is likely a wider known issue.

Currently, Microsoft has not published an official fix or acknowledgment in the public documentation. Since you’re unable to raise a support ticket, I would like to recommend submitting Ideas forum for that thread through this link: Fabric Ideas - Microsoft Fabric Community

We will also continue monitoring for updates from the product team and will share any public announcements or fixes as soon as they're available.

Let me know what you find after giving these steps a try happy to help you investigate this further.

Thank you for using the Microsoft Community Forum.

Hi @jajumonville,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

Based on your description, it appears to be a recent UI layout regression in the notebook interface. When the Table of Contents is enabled, the layout mistakenly adds a non-functional blank column to the right. This column consumes unnecessary space and cannot be resized or removed unless Copilot is opened, which temporarily corrects it.

Unfortunately, there’s no user-side toggle or setting to disable this behaviour as of now. I recommend:

  • Keeping Copilot open while using ToC (if available)
  • Reporting the issue via the notebook's Feedback option, so it can be escalated to the product team

This seems to be a recent UI update issue, and your report could help Microsoft prioritize a fix.
