Gateway issues

Hi,
My gateway has been down but I am listed as connection creator and Resharing. I have 2 other people listed as admin and I dont have access to admin portal.

The gateway is not reachable but the gateway is reliant on IT infrastructure that is down currently. What should I do at this point to narrow down to the cause.

  • The main method to solve this is to access the gateway server itself. It should be a server on your network that you can remote into.  The most common cause is that the "Gateway Service" is not running.  To fix that, you run "services.msc" and locate the services which should have a name like "On Premises Data Gateway" or similar.  They need to be marked as "running" and not "stopped".

After that, i'd go to the start menu of the server and look for "On Premises Data Gateway" application, log into it and see what its telling you.

  • Hi mjsystemss,
    Please check the below:
    1. Check the Virtual Machine/Server is running
2.Check On-premises data gateway service is running
3.If the service has stopped, restart it
4.Open the On-premises Data Gateway application on the server and check its connection status.
5.Check the service principal/password is correct and connection is working.
6.Once the gateway is online, test the data source connection in Power BI Service under Settings ==> Manage connections and gateways.

  • Hi mjsystemss -Since you are not a Gateway Administrator, you can ask one of the gateway admins to check the gateway status from Manage connections and gateways and, more importantly, check the gateway server itself. Once the infrastructure is restored, I would validate in this order:

VM/Server → Gateway Windows Service → Gateway connectivity → Data source connectivity → Power BI connection → Dataset refresh                                                                                                           This helps isolate whether the root cause is the infrastructure, gateway service, network/firewall, datasource, or Power BI configuration.

    Hope this helps,
