query references other queries or steps, Please rebuild this data combination

This error happens when refreshing a dataset in PowerBi service

{"code":"DM_ErrorDetailNameCode_UnderlyingErrorMessage","detail":{"type":1,"value":"[Unable to combine data] qeury1/step1 references other queries or steps, so it may not directly access a data source. Please rebuild this data combination."}}

You can find help for this error on this forum. what is diffenrent in my case is that the same dataset refresh without this error when using a normal database connection , the error happens only when going through a virtual network data gateway that is set up in our workspace . (The vnet gateway is tested and working fine)

Is there an explanation to this ?

Hi. This is usually an issue about privacy levels, you can't combine sources with different privacy levels, you can read about that in here.

https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Desktop/Query-references-other-queries-or-steps-so-it-may-...

In your case you said it's different because when you change your DB connection for using a vnet it breaks. Ok. Can you share more about the combination or merge scenario? Make sure both merging sources are from the same vnet and make sure to read the faq just in case there is another scenario we can't see on your description that might break it: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/vnet/data-gateway-faqs

I hope that helps,
