problems with manual refresh

We are currently using the free service for testing, and I am unable to manually refresh a data set. I can get a power query to refresh after several attampts but just a regular excel sheet will not refresh. The file is on a sharepoint site sync with my desktop. I have the gateway installed as well. Any suggestions?
