power Query / edit dataset no longer available

Hello,

It seems that when I try to create a new dataset in Power BI service, the import has only the Excel file, CSV and create new table options. Other sources are available only in Power BI desktop.

Also, previously created datasets cannot be edited online for their power query transformations.

In other words, we are forced to go through Power BI desktop and then publish them online.

It is no longer possible to create everything just online?

Thank you

Bogdan

Dataset creation on the service has always been limited to a few types of data sources and is lacking data modeling capabilities. Improvements to online dataset authoring is on the roadmap for later this year. In the meantime, any "serious" dataset work requires Power BI Desktop, often complemented by third-party tools such as DAX Studio and Tabular Editor.

Hi,

I get it. but I want to avoid creation in Desktop, cause my data is about 4 milion rows, gathered from a lot of files and do not want to publish it everytime....

Tried to do it in the datamart section, but it's buggy when you save large amounts of data: the datamart gets disconnected from the dataset and you have to start over.

In order to ease the server load for the datamart, its source comes from various dataflows that are refreshed separately and do most of the ETL work.

Even so, when importing from dataflows and not doing any transformation, the datamart crashes.

It seems to me it's caused by a timeout set for refreshing the datamart - if it's too long, it severs the connection.

If in the meantime you have changed something in the datamart, when the server tries to reconnect it with its last version of the dataset, it sees the changes, but does not want to update the dataset. (or it's the other way around?)

There is no possible way to refresh them manually (say in the lineage view) - datamart simply disconnects again.

It's frustrating, but at least there is hope for the future.

I do not understand one thing: aren't we supposed to move everything on-cloud and not rely on desktop software? This is the whole idea behing Power BI service, isn't it?

Hi,

On my side, I have been able in the past in creating everything online, including access to a whole lot of datasources and designing queries. I have about 10 datasets created this way and now I am unable to edit or modigy them. It is really frustrating when you lose so much work.
