White margins exporting PPTX in PowerBI Service

Hi! I was testing some features in PowerBI Service and i can't figure out how to remove white margins while exporting PPTX. I tried adjusting page, closing and minimizing filtering and page navigation. Also tried to do it exporting .pdf in both Service and Desktop (way bigger margins) versions. I wanna ask if at least someone found a workaround, because i know it's a known issue and looks like sometimes it's fixed and sometimes is not.

Hi @gsalvanescki,

Thank you for your detailed update. It’s great to hear that you’ve managed to reduce the white margins significantly by adjusting the page size and alignment. Since you mentioned that only 12px of white margins remain at the bottom (or 6px at the top and bottom when centered). I have identified few additional workarounds that might help fully eliminate the margins:

Consider using a slightly larger custom page size. You have already tried 1920x1068, which reduced the margins. Please try 1920x1082 or 1920x1084 in Power BI Desktop → Canvas Settings → Custom Page Size to see if it eliminates the remaining white space when exporting.

Rather than setting the background color to white, please adjust the background to fully transparent in the Page Background settings. This adjustment may enable PowerPoint to blend the content seamlessly without leaving a visible white margin.

Manually Crop After Export: An alternative solution is to open the exported PPTX file in PowerPoint, select all slides, and use Picture Format → Crop to eliminate any remaining white space. Test Export from Power BI Desktop Instead of Service: If possible, try exporting from Power BI Desktop and compare the results.

Hi @gsalvanescki,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum. Thank you @Akash_Varuna, for your inputs on this issue. After reviewing the details you provided, I have identified few workarounds that may help resolve the issue. Please follow these steps:

To maintain the visual's proportions, use the Lock Aspect Ratio and Resize to Fit options. In the Format pane, under Position, enable Lock Aspect Ratio. Then, use Resize to Fit to adjust the visual to fit a specific area without altering its aspect ratio.

Please verify your Power BI report is created in a 16:9 aspect ratio to align with the standard dimensions of PowerPoint slides. Navigate to Power BI Desktop → Format Pane → Canvas Settings. Set the Page Size to 16:9 (1280x720) or Custom (1366x768, 1920x1080, etc.). Adjust visuals to fit neatly within the report canvas, minimizing empty space.

Power BI sets a white background for reports by default. If you encounter margins, adjust the background color of the report to match that of your PowerPoint presentation. In Power BI Desktop, navigate to the Visualizations Pane, select Format, then Page Background, and change the color from white to your preferred color.

Please remove any unnecessary slicers, navigation panes, or blank spaces that might be causing the white margins. If the white margins persist, open the exported PPTX file in PowerPoint. Select a slide, navigate to Design > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size, and adjust it to fit the content. Additionally, you can manually crop the images within the slides using the Picture Format > Crop tool.

If direct PPTX export does not work as expected, try exporting high-resolution PNGs and manually insert them into PowerPoint. Export visuals as images in Power BI: File > Export > PDF, then extract PNGs from the PDF. Alternatively, use Snipping Tool or Power BI’s Copy Visual as Image feature and paste directly into PowerPoint.

If the issue persists, cropping images in PowerPoint or using high resolution PNG exports might be the best workaround.

Hi!

As much as i tried to, i couldn't find a way to completely remove the white margins. However, after trying every method, now each slide has 12 white pixels only at the bottom (If i do "Vertical Align: Center" in Canvas Settings, it's 6px at the top and 6px at the bottom) exporting from PowerBI Service, which works for me as the PPTX has white background so it's unnoticeable, and doing 1920x1068 makes the export 1920x1080.

Hi @gsalvanescki Could you please check by adjusting the report page size in Power BI Desktop to match slide dimensions (16:9 or 4:3)? Alternatively, try exporting as an image and inserting it into PowerPoint or using custom page setups to minimize margins and In Power BI Desktop, try setting custom report dimensions to reduce scaling inconsistencies during export.
