Where is the Add Machine Learning Model

Hi,

I was following the bellow tutorial to build a machine learning model

Tutorial: Build a machine learning model in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

in doing so, i created a workspace and then through dataflow gen2 i uploaded the dataset, but i am now stuck at the PowerQuery Screen. When i am going to the root folder of workspace i am unable to find the add machine learning option. Am i look at the wrong place?

Thanks for the help.

Sami

Hi Sami,

You're on the right track, but it looks like there’s a bit of confusion about where to find the "Add Machine Learning Model" option in Power BI Service, especially with Dataflows Gen2.

In Power BI Service, the "Add Machine Learning Model" option is only available in Premium workspaces (either Fabric capacity or Premium per user (PPU) enabled). Here’s how to troubleshoot and proceed:

Requirements to see the "Add Machine Learning Model" option:

  • Workspace must be in a Premium or Fabric capacity:
  • You can check this by going to the workspace settings → Settings > Premium tab → Make sure the workspace is assigned to a Premium or Fabric capacity.
  • If you're using PPU, ensure your user has a Premium Per User license and the workspace is marked as PPU.

  • You must be in a Dataflow (not just Power Query screen in isolation):
  • In Dataflows Gen2, make sure you've already saved your queries to a dataflow.
  • After publishing the dataflow, go back to the Dataflows section in your workspace.
  • Select the dataflow → You'll see the "Add Machine Learning Model" option at the top (if all conditions are met).

If you found this helpful, please consider marking it as the accepted solution and giving it a thumbs up.

@Ilgar_Zarbali

Weird.. I have Fabric Preimum workspace here but I still couldn't find it in Dataflow Gen2.

Thanks @Ilgar_Zarbali !

i assigned the capacity and now i am a bit lost in the steps, particularly in the publishing the dataflow part, it does not show me any option to publish, it only says save and run in the power query window. So now when i select the dataflow, add learning model is not coming on the top..

In Dataflow Gen2, the “Save and Run” button is the publishing step. It saves your transformations and runs the query to load data into OneLake. There’s no separate “Publish” button like in other tools.

  1. Next Steps:
After Save and Run, close the Power Query editor.
  2. Go back to your workspace → Dataflows section.
  3. Find and click on the Dataflow Gen2 you just saved and ran.
  4. Now, at the top of the dataflow view, you should see the “Add Machine Learning Model” button — if all prerequisites are met (Premium capacity, valid role, etc.).

If you still don’t see it:

  • Make sure the dataflow has at least one table with successfully loaded data.
  • Double-check that your workspace is in Premium or Fabric capacity.
  • Ensure your role is Contributor, Member, or Admin in the workspace.
  • Confirm you're not accidentally clicking on a semantic model or dataset — ML models are only supported within Dataflows Gen2.

Hey @Ilgar_Zarbali thanks for the reply, but nope, still no luck!

This is what is see after save and run

if i select the dataflow then i see this

and if i select the link of dataflow then it takes me back to query editor!

Here is the check list:

  • Make sure the dataflow has at least one table with successfully loaded data. (checked)
  • Double-check that your workspace is in Premium or Fabric capacity. (checked)
  • Ensure your role is Contributor, Member, or Admin in the workspace.(checked)
  • Confirm you're not accidentally clicking on a semantic model or dataset — ML models are only supported within Dataflows Gen2. (This is where i am stuck)

Hi @huqsami

You may need to have your Admin check if AI workload has been enabled in your capacity setting.

hi,

i am the admin, can you please tell the step by steps process from where i can enable it?

@huqsami

Sorry, this is beyond my knowledge. Maybe other users or community support are in a better position to tell.

I made the assumption because ML icon is not appearing on my Dataflow Gen2 either when I was trying to look for it on my end yeaterday and I know that AI workload is currently disabled at my place.
