Using RLS in Desktop

Good afternoon,

So I currently have a datamart connection linked to PBI Desktop which I am using to create the reports. I am currently attempting to set up RLS however in PBI desktop the manage roles section is greyed out

After reading on MS Learn Row-level security (RLS) with Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn.

It has stated that RLS can be set up on the semantic, however the issue I am facing is if I go to security settings on the semantic it is referring me back to PBI desktop

Has any one encountered a similar issue, and does any one know how i can resolve this?

Thanks

Following on I have still been unable to get the RLS to work, however I found a work around using the liquid code i previously provided and embedding this directly in the portal, the problem now is that although the filter appears to be working, it is returning blank tiles.

The report has all necessary permissions set up to the relative groups/users

@Johnm86

It seems like you're encountering issues with setting up Row-Level Security (RLS) in Power BI Desktop. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this:

  1. Check Data Source Compatibility: Ensure that the data source you're using supports RLS. RLS can be applied to supported data sources, such as SQL Server, Analysis Services, and Power BI datasets. If your data source doesn't support RLS, you won't be able to set it up.

  2. Update Power BI Desktop: Make sure you're using the latest version of Power BI Desktop. Sometimes, new features or bug fixes related to security settings are introduced in updates. You can download the latest version from the Microsoft website.

  3. Verify Permissions: Ensure that you have sufficient permissions to set up security roles in Power BI Desktop. You may need to be an administrator or have specific permissions granted to manage roles.

  4. Check Data Model: Ensure that you have a properly configured data model in Power BI Desktop. RLS is typically applied at the data model level, so make sure your data model is set up correctly with relationships, tables, and measures.

  5. Review Documentation: Double-check the documentation or resources you're using to set up RLS. Make sure you're following the correct steps and guidelines provided by Microsoft. Sometimes, overlooking a step or misinterpreting instructions can lead to issues.

  6. Test in Power BI Service: If you're still unable to set up RLS in Power BI Desktop, try publishing your report to the Power BI Service and setting up RLS there. Sometimes, certain features may be restricted or unavailable in Power BI Desktop but can be accessed in the Power BI Service.

Hi @johnbasha33 ,

thank you for your input. With regard to your suggesstions:

1. The data source is Dataverse

2. I have the latest PBI desktop just downloaded yesterday

3. I am currently using a global admin account

4. The data model is set up as:

Johnm86_0-1712579367724.png

5. I have re-read and tried numerous attempts on the set up before asking here

6. As stated, in PBI service, it refers me back to desktop

I am a little confused by it all as theortically it should be working and I can not see why it isnt.

Thanks

@Johnm86 Hi, you  need to upgrade your gateway to the latest one in the gateway cluster server.
it is not related to your power bi desktop.

pls check below, your issue will be resolved for sure.

Hi @johnbasha33

We do not use an on premises gateway, these are all ootb functions with everything in dataverse/sharepoint and PBI.

To clarify the nature I am trying to get a report to display in a portal and filter data specifically for the authenticated user that is logged in per their parent account.

I have also attempted this directly in the portal by using :   https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=ID eq '{{ user.parentcustomerid.Name }}' but with this filter i get an error:

without the filter it displays fine
