Updating Dashboard with a Live Excel / Connecting to SharePoint excel spreadsheet

I created a dashboard with data from an excel sheet off my desktop. I know you can import data from a Share Point folder or web, but it is not working for me. I also have published my Power Bi dashboard to the web, but there is still no conenction to my dataset. I want the data to have the ability to be updated which then updates the dashboard. I understand that there is a Refresh feature, but again that is not working as there is no connection to my excel. What should I do/what are the steps to making this dashboard be able to automically update. I also want to keep the parent excel sheet and the dashboard in a Share Point folder so others can open it. This was probably confusing, but just looking for a basic step by step way for my excel to be in my deashboard and able to be updated which then updates the dashboard.

Hi @egilbert23

If your data comes from local excel, a gateway must be installed and running in order for the Power BI service to connect to on-premises data sources and refresh the dataset.

Here are the basic steps on how to install the gateway and refresh local data source:

  1. First , install the gateway.
  2. In the Power BI Service settings, select "Manage connections and gateway" to add a connection to the gateway for local excel.
  3. In Power BI Service, select the semantic model of the report or dashboard and open the settings to apply the gateway.
  4. Setup a schedule refresh.

You can refer to the following link for detailed steps:

If your data comes from SharePoint Online, you can turn on “OneDrive refresh” option or set up a schedule refresh directly in Power BI Service.
