Sharing data source with external user

Our requirements

  • Our organization configures the gateway and creates a data source for each client, which is then shared with them. (We can add our clients as guest users to our tenant, but cannot add them as internal users)
  • Clients should be able to create their own reports and publish them to their SaaS service, as well as schedule refreshes by connecting report datasets to the data source shared by us.

Problem

  • Our data sources can only be shared with internal users within our tenant, and not with guest users.

Options so far

  • Install a separate gateway for each client (Seems costly)
  • Create a new account for external users in our domain (How can we restrict access?)

Any comments on the above options or any other ways? What is the best way to achieve our requirements?

One option could be to create a separate Azure Active Directory (AAD) tenant for your clients and then invite them as external users to that tenant. This would allow you to share the data sources with them as internal users of that tenant.

Another option could be to use Power BI Embedded, which allows you to embed Power BI reports within your own application. With Power BI Embedded, you can create a workspace for each client and grant them access to that workspace. This would allow them to create and publish their own reports using the data source shared by you, without the need for a gateway.

Overall, it's important to consider factors such as cost, security, and ease of management when choosing the best solution for your organization.
