All,
We are connecting to files in sharepoint and everything works.
Now each developer would create reports either from PBI Desktop or create dataflow from PBI service from Sharepoint and when the developers connect to sharepoint, PBI uses the developers credentials.
We want to avoid this and rather we want the developers to use existing connection defined by administrators.
So to accomplish this I created the connection already in PBI service with dedicated acct and give permission to the connection to a developer. When the developer creating dataflow in PBI service from the sharepoint, it asks for the connection url and then it defaults to his credentials but there is a way to change the credentails to dedicated acct but it also asks to input for password for that dedicated acct which we want to avoid.
Can you please let me know how to accomplish this?
Thanks,
John
What I have done in the past is use developer credentials in the desktop client, then when publishing the first time "take over" the refresh/dataset with the service account. Subsequent publishes will still use the service account without any special treatment, it's just the first time that you need to do the takeover on the refresh.
Thanks very much, I guess that should work and I just tested it.
I don't think there are any other approach to this.
For other database connections such as Oracle, SQL server etc., it is managed well, admin can create connection in Power BI service and share with other developers and developers when creating dataflows they can just input the connection string and it automatically authenticates using the credentials provided when creating the connection. No need for developers to enter the credentials.
Sharepoint is little different.
Thanks,
John
