In Power BI, under the Pro license, the maximum size for a semantic model (dataset) is 1 GB, which limits the volume of data you can import and store directly within a model. However, when using Microsoft Fabric with Premium capacity, the limits increase significantly depending on the Capacity Unit (CU) or SKU you are using. For example, with Fabric F64 and higher (formerly known as Power BI Premium P SKUs), the maximum dataset size can go up to 400 GB or more per semantic model, with the total storage depending on your purchased capacity. The higher the SKU (F64, F128, F256, etc.), the more resources and memory are allocated, enabling much larger and more complex models. Additionally, when using large models and incremental refresh, Fabric helps manage and optimize memory usage even further. This flexibility is essential for enterprise-level analytics where large volumes of data from data warehouses or lakehouses are common. Therefore, moving from a Pro license to a Fabric Premium capacity not only lifts the 1 GB limit but also unlocks enhanced performance, scalability, and advanced features needed for larger-scale business intelligence.
