Seeking clarity on actions a user can perform with 'Build' permissions on a specific dataset

Hi All,

I am looking to understand what additional actions a specific user can perform if we give build permission to a group of people on a specific dataset on workspace.

To enable users to utilize the 'Analyze in Excel' feature, we have decided to grant them 'Build' permissions on the specific dataset instead of upgrading their access to 'Contributor,' ensuring they can leverage the functionality while maintaining controlled access.

Hence, it is will be really helpful if someone can give the details of additional accesses that a user can get with that build permission.

Actions Enabled by Build Permission on a Dataset:

  1. Create Reports/Dashboards: Build reports using Power BI Desktop or other tools with a live connection to the dataset.

  2. Analyze in Excel: Use the dataset in Excel (e.g., PivotTables) for analysis.

  3. View Dataset Schema: Explore tables, columns, and measures for report-building.

  4. Use in Other Workspaces: Connect the dataset to create content in other workspaces (if they have write access there).

What Build Permission Does Not Allow:

  • Modify, delete, or refresh the dataset.

  • Change dataset permissions.

  • Export underlying row-level data (unless specifically allowed).
