Report refresh question

Hello experts,

I have been using POWER BI Desktop for last few years but novice to Power BI service. My organization has discarded tableau and procured Power BI with Premium capacity. My On Premises Gateway are all set up for SQL servers that I use.

I am trying to understand few things so that I can bring myself up to speed. Please be patient with me if these questions sound ridiculous.

When I create a report (consisting multiple tabs) in Power BI desktop and publish it in the workspace, I have noticed that it publishes both the data source and the report.

Now if my gateway connection is configured correctly for the dataset and the scheduled refresh is set up, do I expect my report in PBI Service to get updated once the data refresh is sucessful as per the scheduled refresh?

I am trying to figure out what is the bet way to ensure the reports in the service are auto refreshed based on the schedule refresh set up by me once I am doe with my initial modelling and BI viz. I want to ensure that the consumers are accessing the most up-to-date data from the service.

As per below my next schduled refresh would be 11/26/2019 7AM EST. Once that refresh happens should I also expect the report to get refreshed with the up-to-date data ?

Hi @smpa01 ,

If you finish installing your gateway and config correspond datasource, data credentials and schedule refresh on service, it means your dataset will be updated as your schedule plans.

BTW, power bi service contains other refreshes to sync the source dataset data to dashboard tiles and reports.

Notice:
1. Refresh plan does not mean these refresh operations will be executed on time, it may exist some delay due to a few reasons. (refresh request will send on time)
2. Refresh plans may be canceled if previous refresh operations haven't finished.

@Anonymous  thanks for getting back to me on this.

"If you finish installing your gateway and config correspond datasource, data credentials and schedule refresh on service, it means your dataset will be updated as your schedule plans." -  Let's suppose this part is perfectly done and the dataset is refresheing as per the scheduled refresh.

But my question is once the dataset is refreshed are the corresponding reports going to be auto-updated as well (like it happens in Tableau) instead of the consumers having to manually hit the "Refresh" button to see the up-to-date report?

Hi @smpa01 ,

Yes, these refreshes only update cached dataset records. If you do not work with direct query/live connection mode, these data not auto-sync to report side. (they will update when you reload report)
