Report in service has become bugged, unable to refresh or publish and override it

I have a report that was supposed to refresh this morning, instead it has entered a bugged state where it cannot be accessed in service (just hangs while loading), cannot be refreshed in service (Nothing happens when selecting refresh) and unable to publish to report to the same workspace to override (Publish just hangs).

The exact same report will upload to other workspaces without an issue, and if I just change the name of the report then it will publish to the same workspace.

I could just delete this report and model and then re set up the permissions etc again. But i'd only want to do this as a last step, while also understanding what has caused this to happen in the first place.

Thanks

Hi @LPP ,

You might want to test by seeing if you can download it to desktop.  Then, in desktop, hit the refresh and see what the error message is.  Often, the error message is different in desktop and service and gives you some more information to chase.

If you can't download it then I think the rebuild option is your best bet.  BUT, you might want to put in a support ticket with Microsoft since they have the ability to look at things on the Service side.  They may be able to give you a more informative reason as well.

Hello @LPP,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community and a thanks to @collinq for their helpful suggestions.

To build on their advice, here are some steps to further troubleshoot the issue with your bugged report:

  • Download the .pbix file from the workspace (report/dataset menu > Download this file).
  • Open in Power BI Desktop, click Refresh, and note any error messages. Desktop may reveal issues not visible in the Service.
  • In Power BI Service, go to dataset Settings > Refresh History to check for errors (e.g: timeouts, credentials).
  • Verify Data Source Credentials are valid. If using OneDrive sync, try disabling it.
  • Renaming and republishing works, but to avoid reconfiguring permissions, try uploading the .pbix via import > Files > Local File in the Service.

Thank you.

It wouldn't let me download the report from service. I went with the deletion and uploading again which resolved the issue.
In the report refresh log there was a credential issue with a data source, I had resolved this in desktop and this was what stopped me from being able to upload it. Not sure why this happened by the report fell into a locked state.

Thankyou both for your responces on this.
