Refreshing Excel Workbook in Power BI Service

I have taken the following steps and am getting an error whenever I try and refresh a Workbook in the service using Excel online.  If fact, I cannot do any type of filtering or anyting.  The only fix is download the workbook, open it up, make changes or do whatever I want, and then save.  Changes will show the next time someone looks at the workbook.  Cannot do any scheduled refresh.  Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

  1. Open Excel and Connect to Dataset located in the PowerBI service.  The dataset contains both Imported and Direct Query information.
  2. Create a Pivot Table using the dataset and measures that were created in the dataset.
  3. Save the file to OneDrive for Businss.
  4. Open PowerBI service, Get Data, File, One Drive Business, Select File and choose Connect Option.

File uploads fine and when I go to it, it opens in Excel Online but cannot do anything.  Get the error below.  There must be something I am doing wrong.

Hi @Razorbx13

You can note the purpose here:

you can’t edit your workbook in Power BI. But if you need to make some changes, you can click Edit, and then choose to edit your workbook in Excel Online or open it in Excel on your computer. Any changes you make are saved to the workbook on OneDrive.

If you'd like to change the filter:

If your Excel workbook file connects to external data sources, or you imported from a local drive, you can setup scheduled refresh to make sure your dataset or report is always up-to-date. In most cases, setting up scheduled refresh is quite easy to do, but going into the details is outside the scope of this article. See Data refresh in Power BI to learn more.

Well I must be doing something wrong.  I can see the worksheet in PowerBI and the PowerBI dataset that I connected to in Excel when building the report.  And I can Edit in Excel Online.  I can do a few editing things (like change a cell color, type something in a cell) basically do anything except for Refreshing the Pivot Table or making any changes whatsoever to the Pivot Table.  Else I get the error below.  If I attempt to remove or add or adjust the pivot table, error below.  Go to Data in the Menu and Refresh Data?  Error.  That is what I mean as to what is the purpose of the file if I cannot "work, pivot and refresh" the Pivot table or work with the PowerBI dataset I am seeing.  In fact, I cannot do anything with the Dataset at all.

Hi there

Currently it is not possible to refresh an Excel Workbook that is connected to a Power BI Dataset.

You can vote for an idea on https://ideas.powerbi.com

I will vote for that, so what is the purpose of the Workbook section then?

Hi there

It is for you to host Excel Workbooks within the Power BI Service.
