Hi,
I have the following problem with my refresh.
Around two weeks ago my refreshes on Power BI Service started failing with the following error message.
It started failing for all the reports I have published. I have a central data warehouse (Redshift) but we’re connecting Power BI to a third party app (semantic layer) through a PostgreSQL ODBC connector.
After trying to refresh manually, eventually the error went away and the refresh worked. Later, some of the scheduled refreshes worked and some gave the above error. To make it even more confusing, the same report could fail in the morning refresh, but succeed in the afternoon one, without me changing anything. I tried to identify the pattern on which reports fail and when, but could not see any pattern at all. It just appears to be random.
When I downloaded the report into Desktop and tried refreshing there I did not have any issues and could refresh normally. I also updated all the credentials in both Desktop and Service (making sure that I am setting the same Privacy level) and cleared cache. I also doublechecked that the credentials are still valid, by logging into the 3rd party platform. I could log in and see all the data there without any problems. However none of this actually solved the problem.
Any idea what could be causing this? Or at least where the problem could be coming from? Prior to this error appearing we did not change any setting in Power BI or the Data warehouse. Also I find it super weird that sometimes the refresh succeeds and sometimes it fails.
Thanks in advance!
Moses
Hi Moses,
Based on the error message you shared, it seems that the ODBC driver is having trouble connecting to the PostgreSQL database. There could be various reasons why this error is occurring, and it could be challenging to determine the exact root cause without more information.
Here are a few things you can check to troubleshoot the issue:
Verify that the ODBC connection is configured correctly, and that the connection string is accurate. Check that the hostname, port, username, and password are all correct.
Check that the PostgreSQL database is running correctly and that there are no issues with network connectivity. You can try pinging the server from the machine where the ODBC driver is installed to make sure that you can reach it.
Check the logs in the PostgreSQL server to see if there are any error messages or warnings that could shed light on the issue.
Check that you have the appropriate permissions to access the database and tables in PostgreSQL.
Try running the same queries that you are using in Power BI directly against the database to see if they are working correctly. This will help isolate the issue to Power BI or PostgreSQL.
Check that you are using the correct version of the ODBC driver and that it is compatible with the version of PostgreSQL you are using.
Check if there are any updates to the ODBC driver, and consider updating to the latest version if there are.
Check if there are any network or firewall issues that could be affecting the connection between Power BI and the PostgreSQL database.
I hope these suggestions help you in resolving the issue. If you need more assistance, please feel free to ask!
