The power bi portal (app.powerbi.com) is limited as a reporting portal since I would like to (among others things):
- have a central place where all my repoorts (ssrs, excel, power bi/pbix) are located
- customize the portal by adding descriptions and grouping reports etc.
More specifically I would like to use sharepoint online as the the central place for reports.
I have created a site of the type Business Intelligence Center but all I am able to do is to upload the powerbi/pbix files as "files" - I cant view the reports in the web browser - all I can do is downloading the files and open them in power bi desktop.
Any ideas here?
Workarounds?
Anyone now if this is not supported yet or if its the the pipe?
Yeah, so actually this is kind of how it used to work and Microsoft basically killed it off.
You can group reports in Power BI by creating group workspaces.
What you can do today is that you put your Excel files and PBIX files into SharePoint and then you "connect" them to Power BI. So "Get Data" | Files | SharePoint, select a file and choose "Connect".
SSRS is still hanging out there but SQL Server 2016 promises much better integration between SSRS and Power BI.
Thanks for getting back!
Not sure what you mean by the following?

I found this suggestion http://ppm4all.com/2016/02/04/publish-power-bi-report-to-sharepoint-online/
But publish to web does not seem to wotk when you are connected to on prem data spources (via gateway), which sounds reasonable.
@jockefe There is a shift in how things work with Power BI. The old model that @Greg_Deckler is making reference to is where all users come in to the same location to view reports. In Power BI, its the opposite. The reports can exist in one location, and can be shared out to individuals. Those individuals all have their own workspaces. Here is a quick diagram
I reference a PBI Group here as this is the model that I find most useful. Create a Power BI Group to manage all reports in their various forms, and share those reports to end users. Currently there is limited functionality in the way of admin controls to manage a large number of reports, but I can see that coming in the future. So the Group gives you your central location, but there isn't anything currently that will allow you to customize a portal.
If you are dead set on using sharepoint, I would recommend the same approach above to manage your reports that you would then embed into sharepoint sites for end users to consume. Be aware however, that the embed feature isn't authenticated right now, so you are in essence exposing your URL of the report publicly. The full on premises story comes together in 2016 and you'll be able to use Desktop files in SSRS eventually.
