Power BI service chart with date axis displaying more dates with empty values

In PBI desktop i have a CALENDAR TBL_Date table with defined start and end dates for column "date". This TBL_Date is linked with the data table which has 3 columns, "date", "label", "value. I create a chart using this "date" column of the TBL_Date for the x-axis, the "value" for the y-axis and legend will have the "label" values. The chart in PBI desktop looks as expected.

I upload the report on PBI service and i see that the same chart has a starting date prior to 1980. I have checked my data an the min date found is for 2025 onwards. I have unselected the "auto date/time" from the options in the Desktop app.

What could be causing this or could it be a power bi service glitch?

Of note, the same report worked fine up to a few weeks ago.

Was able to fix it. I had to delete the visual and recreate it from scratch. Originally whatever i tried was on the preexisting visual. Might have been a glitch with that specific visual component (simple line chart).

thanks to all for the recommendations!

Hi @PowerBeeTree  ,
Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

A misconfiguration in the TBL_Date relationships may be causing orphaned dates, leading to unexpected behavior in the report. To resolve this, go to Model View in Power BI Desktop and verify the relationships between TBL_Date[date] and Data[date] to ensure they are correctly linked. Additionally, check that the date range in TBL_Date fully covers the minimum and maximum dates in the Data table, preventing any missing or incorrectly mapped dates.
Also verify weather data type is consistent or not as mismatched data types between the TBL_Date "date" column and the Data "date" column can lead to incorrect date values. To resolve this, ensure that both columns are set to Date or Date/Time type instead of text. If necessary, use the DATEVALUE(Data[date]) function in a calculated column to standardize the format and ensure proper alignment in the data model.

i have made sure that all the "date" columns are of the same Date/Time type.

Even when i replace the X-Axis date from the TBL_Date[date] to Data[date] i still get the same issue ie the chart looks as expected on PBI Desktop and on PBI service the starting date is before 1980. I also removed the report and its semantic model from the app, deleted everything from the PBI service and re-published.

Hi @PowerBeeTree ,

Could you kindly go to the Model View in Power BI Desktop and verify the relationships between TBL_Date[date] and Data[date] to ensure they are correctly linked? Additionally, it would be helpful to check that the date range in TBL_Date fully covers the minimum and maximum dates in the Data table, to prevent any missing or incorrectly mapped dates.

I replaced the Xaxis values to come straight from the Data_TBL[date] and not the TBL_Date[date] and still the issue persists. This should ensure the min/max dates are the ones i want to plot.

Interestingly when i switch to "categorical" instead of "continuous" i see only the dates I have but as expected the X-axis is ugly as it becomes very "long" as it is plotting every single date.

Hi @PowerBeeTree ,

Sorry to know it didn’t help. Please consider reaching out to Microsoft Support. You can provide them with all the troubleshooting steps you've already taken, which will help them understand the issue better and provide a resolution. They might be able to identify something specific about your admin account setup or provide a solution that isn't immediately obvious.

  • my current version for PBI desktop is: Version: 2.139.2054.0 64-bit (January 2025)
  • this is what i see on the PBI service:
    • Service version:13.0.25125.48
    • Client version:2501.2.22731-train

I believe both are the most recent ones.

Hi @PowerBeeTree ,

If the issue appeared after uploading to the Service and the Desktop behaves as expected, it may be a Service-specific glitch.

If this is the case try to re uplod and publish the report to the service
If this post helped please do give a kudos and accept this as a solution
Thanks In Advance

I did delete the report and its semantic model from the Service and reuploaded (via publishing from the Desktop app) but still no luck. The chart on the Desktop looks fine but on the Service still shows a starting date before 1980.

It is really puzzling.

@PowerBeeTree Strange could you try manually refreshing the model in Power BI service maybe if there is some cached data there this would allow to get the latest data
And i suppose the data type and all are same and no incoerrct join is happening

I refresh manually and still the same. I also replaced the Xaxis values to come straight from the Data_TBL[date] and not the TBL_Date[date] and still the issue persists.

Hi @PowerBeeTree

Based on what you said, this could potentially be a glitch with the service. What I would recommend is making sure you have the latest version of power BI desktop installed, re upload the report and see if that fixes your issue.
