Power BI Service on premise gateway

Hello everyone

I need to know if it is possible to use Power BI Service without uploading data to Cloud. During my research I find  out about gateway where if I understand it correctly the data should still be only stored on my server and basicly on service should only be some kind of "pointer" where everytime reports needs to use the data the dataset takes it from server but dosn't save it anywhere.

I know it is impossible to use Service without uploading anything to cloud and i know this will be potentional threat but for my usage Report Server is limited in areas that are needed.

I don't know if got the point right because more i tried to find less i understand it. Because of that I am asking here to have most information available.

Thanks in advance

Hi @Fibos ,

The Local Data Gateway acts as a bridge. It provides fast and secure data transfer between local data - that is, data that is not in the cloud - and multiple Microsoft cloud services such as Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Azure Analysis Services, and more. The gateway facilitates fast, secure back-end communication. This communication flows from users in the cloud to local data sources and back to the cloud. By using a gateway, organizations can keep databases and other data sources on their local network while still securely using that local data in cloud services. For more information on local data gateways, you can review the documentation: On-premises data gateway - Power BI | Microsoft Learn.

Once the gateway has been installed and configured successfully, you can use the gateway for a single data source or multiple data sources. For more information on adding a gateway data source, you can refer to the documentation: Add or remove a gateway data source - Power BI | Microsoft Learn.

If your Current Period does not refer to this, please clarify in a follow-up reply.

Best Regards,

Clara Gong

@Greg_Deckler ok tkhanks for reply

As it seems it works with SSAS where there is pre-prepared data (selcted collumn, measures, roles, etc.)

Is it possible to achive on-premise data with Service with just SQL?

@Fibos Yes. SQL Server supports Direct Query. SSAS supports Direct Query and Live. So if you are asking, can you do it with just SQL Server databases and not SQL Server Analysis Services then the answer is still yes either way. Is that what you are asking?

@Fibos This is possible if you build all of your semantic models to use Direct Query to on-premises data sources through that gateway.
