Power BI Report Builder reports with SQL Server on-prem

Can someone clarify what is needed to share Power BI Report Builder paginated reports with SQL Server 2016 on-prem as the data source?

We already have E5 licenses (which include Power BI pro).

I've created a successful PBIRB report locally using the on-prem data source, and publishing throws the error solved here:

https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Service/NotCreatedByFormattedTableReport-error-after-trying-to-publ...

I'm assuming I need to upgrade my own Pro license to Premium so I can have a Premium workspace to "publish to Power BI service" from the PBIRB app.  Is that enough?  Is there a data connector/helper I would need to install on prem to broker the data source connection to the cloud?

If anyone has seen a blog or MS doc specifically for this part, please share.  For some reason I can't seem to find the right information.

Thanks!

Hi, @tbakrf

No additional data connectors or helpers are required.

Prerequisites for using paginated reports:

  • You don't need any license to download Power BI Report Builder from the Microsoft Download Center for free.
  • You can publish and share paginated reports in your My Workspace or in other workspaces, as long as the workspace is in a Power BI Premium capacity and you have write access to the workspace.
  • In a Premium Gen1 capacity, a Power BI admin needs to enable paginated reports in the Premium capacities section of the Power BI admin portal. In a Premium Gen2 capacity, paginated reports are enabled automatically.

A single paginated report can have a number of different data sources. It doesn't have an underlying data model, unlike Power BI reports. You create embedded data sources and datasets in the paginated report itself. You can't use shared data sources or shared datasets. You create reports in Report Builder on your local computer. If a report connects to on-premises data, after you upload the report to the Power BI service, you need to create a gateway and redirect the data connection. Here are some of the data sources you can connect to:

  • Azure SQL Database and Azure Synapse Analytics (via Basic and oAuth)
  • Azure Analysis Services (via SSO)
  • SQL Server via a gateway
  • Power BI datasets
  • Oracle
  • Teradata

Hi @tbakrf

You can also use Power BI Premium Per User to use Power BI Report builder or in the Power BI Service called Paginated reports.

If you search for paginated reports you will see how to use the it. You can then connect via the On-Premise gateway to your SQL Server source.
