Power BI DirectQuery with AWS Redshift

Hi,

I want to subscribe to Power BI Pro, but I need to make sure of a few things.

Can Power BI Pro access data with DirectQuery mode to AWS Redshift (with private network)?

Is it with Power BI IP whitelist on AWS Redshift or what?

Thank you,

Hi @Irvanda ,
Yes, Power BI Pro can access AWS Redshift in DirectQuery mode via a private network. Use an on-premises data gateway to securely connect Power BI to your Redshift cluster in a private VPC. Alternatively, whitelist Power BI's IP ranges (published by Microsoft) in Redshift's security group for direct access. Ensure proper permissions and optimize queries for best performance.

Hi Akash,

Thank you for the answer.

What do you mean by on-premises data gateway?
Where is the setting and what is it like?
Are there any references?

Could you help with the Power BI IP range information?

Please advice,

Hi @Irvanda ,
On-Premises Data Gateway: A tool to securely connect Power BI to private data sources (like AWS Redshift) without exposing them to the internet. Install it on a machine with access to Redshift and configure it in Power BI settings.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-install
Power BI IP Ranges: If not using a gateway, whitelist Power BI's IP ranges in Redshift's security group (default port: 5439). Download the updated ranges from

Hi Akash,

Thanks for the info, but it seems like there is still something missing regarding the Power BI IP Range from where I need to download.

Hi @Irvanda ,

@Akash_Varuna  Thanks for your prompt response.

Additionally, to connect using DirectQuery with Amazon Redshift, you can refer to the following link: Power Query Amazon Redshift connector - Power Query | Microsoft Learn

Hi @v-aatheeque,

Thank you for additional information.

Hi @v-aatheeque,

I want to asking another question, related to memory and storage models?

If I use DirectQuery to get data from AWS Redshift, does it still consume the memory model (1 GB) and native storage (10 GB) in Power BI Pro?

Thank you,

Hi  @Irvanda

In DirectQuery mode, Power BI does not store data in its internal memory. Instead, it sends queries to Amazon Redshift on demand whenever a user interacts with the report. As a result, since the dataset is not physically stored within Power BI, it does not count toward the 1 GB per dataset limit applicable to Power BI Pro.

The 10 GB per user storage limit in Power BI Pro primarily pertains to datasets stored in Import Mode. Since DirectQuery does not retain data within Power BI, it does not consume this storage capacity.
