I have stand alone paginated reports (non embedded) connected to a data source published on a Premium workspace.
I am having issues with users in audience groups, without workspace access getting the ‘unable to render’ error message.
To troubleshoot, the underlying report datasource has been downgraded from a DB to a basic single Excel sheet with several datasets on different tabs. Very basic excel/sharepoint connection, no gateway.
It appears that the only way that the users (internal corporate, app consumers only) can successfully run the reports in the app is if I also make them part of the workspace as viewers.
Do I really have to add the users to the workspace AND the audience? or is there another permission setting that I am missing?
Its seems to contradict as adding them as viewers of the workspace makes the audience grouping redundant. These users would not be using the workspace itself at all.
Thank you!

Hi @DizHamilton
Can you make sure that the users have got read permissions to the underlying dataset?
Hi @DizHamilton
Can you make sure that the users have got read permissions to the underlying dataset?
@GilbertQ - Thank you! Yes...that was it.
I did see that dataset permission but because it didn't explicitly have a 'read' option I wasn't too sure and got distracted looking elsewhere for a solution. Un-ticking the options enforced 'read'.
Wouldn't it be helpful if it admin were warned before adding users to an audience that the user didn't have access to the report dataset or if it was done automatically if a person was added to a report audience? *sigh*
Best wishes and thanks!
