Migrating On-Prem Data Gateway to a new server - Is uninstalling ever necessary?

Hi,

I'm considering different scenarios on how to migrate Power BI On-Premises Data Gateway from one server-instance to another. This is quite business critical service, so I need to be sure that I encounter minimal surprises.

One plan is to terminate the old server-instance simultaneously when starting the new instance. Do I first need to uninstall the Data Gateway -application in the old server, before I can migrate it to the new server? The old server will be nonexistent when I'm configuring the gateway-application in the new server. I have the recovery key available. I just want to make sure that the migration is not "locked", when the old instance is suddenly destroyed.

ofc, I could first uninstall the software, and only then destroy the instance, but this would make the service interruption longer. Or I could create the new instance in parallel, and then migrate without any service interruption, but this would require extra work.

Best regards

Antti

There is no need for any of that.  When you register the new instance you can add it to an existing cluster, or you can choose to replace a cluster member in the cluster.  If you do the latter then the Power BI service will seemlessly redistribute the mashup requests to the new instance, and the old instance will be orphaned. You can then decommission it.
