Major Issue with Dataflows and Excel Connections and Security

Hey all, Im wondering if anyone else can reproduce this issue.

Basically in the last two days we had some serious degredation to out dataflows in power bi and power platform. To the point where if i try to reach an excel file on sharepoint. We are seeing URLs that are NOT what the dataflow should be attempting to reach in our tenant. its almost randomized and it seems like a serious issue.

Heres a screenshot of what i saw in the PQ editor in dataflows:

I wanted to document this because this seems like a very alarming issue if my tenant is seeing other URLs and attempting to connect to them. Here is another example that was exposed to us:

Additionally:

This seems like a major security issue on microsofts end. We have a ticket in with MS but I believe this should be documented for others  to see and be aware of.

I can't speak for kritchensBMcD, but our data flows that were experiencing issues seem to be processing now, and the cycle times are back to the same timing as before the problem.

We are also experiencing the same issue. We can also see URL for sharepoints that do not belong to our company. I really hope Microsoft Support addresses this because it's concerning from several perspectives

I am having the same issue. I am seeing unknown URLs when working with my dataflows. All dataflows also started hitting the 2 hour timeout limit on Jan 8. Before that time they were refershing in 30 minutes or so.

We are experiencing the same issue. Multiple dataflows failing. A dataflow that used to take 2 minutes to refresh is timing out at 2 hours. If I limit the number of records significantly, it will succeed, but still takes just under 2 hours to process 100 files.

When you enter the dataflow are you seeing it pop up with a random link? and also does it look like its trying to load from somewhere else?

Yes, I saw a different tenant name show up at one point when loading the preview. I double-checked all of the code, and there is only a reference to a site within our tenant. I'm trying to grab a snapshot of it, but I don't see it doing it again so far. It is extremely slow at processing what used to be quick. We are having issues across several dataflows and a model that all started 1/15, with no changes between succeeding and the start of the failures.
We have been troubleshooting, but since they all started 1/15, it seems to be related to the update somehow.

Hi @kritchensBMcD,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum and highlighting this issue. We understand your concerns about the unexpected URLs being generated while accessing Excel files on SharePoint and the possible security risks involved.

We appreciate your diligence in documenting this issue, as it can help raise awareness among other users who may be experiencing similar challenges.

Kindly find below a few steps that may assist you in troubleshooting and potentially resolving the issue:

  1. Verify your connection settings and ensure you have the necessary permissions to access SharePoint files.
  2. Clear your browser’s cache or try using an alternative browser to determine if the issue persists.
  3. Attempt to connect to a different Excel file within the same SharePoint site to ascertain whether the issue is widespread or limited to specific files.

Since you have already raised a support ticket, we recommend monitoring updates from Microsoft regarding this matter. The team will likely be actively working on solutions for reported issues and may document relevant troubleshooting steps in their official articles for reference.

Thank you.

We logged a ticket but support has been zero help in this. Since this is not an issue impacting one person, we truly need this escalated and this community should be kept up to speed on updates

Hi, already verified my connections. I'm also in diffrent client tenants and im seeing this same behavior in two other client tenants on top of my own companies tenant. This is not an isolated issue.

Hi @kritchensBMcD

As far as I am aware, I've seen this happen to other users and I'm pretty sure there'd be a fix soon!
