Issues with Power BI accessing Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2

Hi folks

I`m running into some data source access issues lately. We involved Microsoft support team but didn`t get a perfect solution. I wondered if anyone of you had ever run into similar issues, if so how did you fix it?

I'm using Power BI to access 12 Parquet files in Azure Synapse Data Storage Gen2. In Azure Synapse my account has a contributor role. With this account i can browse to the right folder in Synapse and see all those parquet files. Initially i had access to these files as in below Picture.

For some reasons, i delected all the original queries in Power Query while i was optimizing them. and later i Cleared Permission here, as a result all the 'Data source' files you see above were gone.

I tried below steps with MS team

1. Get Data from source 'parquet' file with FULL path of each parquet file.

2. Get Data from Source 'Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2' with partial path. like in below picutres.

All ends up in below picure.

the Weird thing is when i Click 'Edit' it does NOT take us back to this pop-up window,

neither we could go back to window below

3. we also tried Clear all the caches in below.

In the end he advised me to use Account Key instead, which is usually only available to platform team, For me Microsoft account would be a better choice as i use this to access all the other data sources. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @MasonMA ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

From your scenario, the issue is due to clearing the data source permissions in Power BI Desktop, which removed the cached Microsoft account credentials and is now blocking reconnection to Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2. Even though you have the Contributor role at the storage account level, you also need to make sure your user account has the right Access Control List (ACL) permissions at the container or folder level otherwise, you may see the “Access to the resource is forbidden” error.

To fix this, close Power BI, go to File > Options and settings > Data Source Settings > Global Permissions, and remove any cached entries for your storage endpoints (like *.dfs.core.windows.net). Then restart Power BI and reconnect using Azure Data Lake Gen2 > File System View, which should prompt you to sign in with your Microsoft account be sure to use the correct organizational login. If you don’t get the prompt, try using Azure Storage Explorer to check if the issue is with Power BI or the storage-level ACLs.

If you need immediate access, you could also ask your platform team for a temporary Account Key or SAS token to bypass the authentication problem and test connectivity.

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you need any further assistance, feel free to reach out.

Thank you.

Thanks! Clearing the cache under Global setting was neglected while I was troubleshooting with MS team. I tested it yesterday and also found this was the root cause. Thanks for pointing this out!
