Issue with sharing older dataset with "Viewer" role users. > Unable to load Model.

So here is an interesting one:

I have a dataset that works just fine and sharing also works with all users as long as they are either from the role admin, contributor or member. Users with the viewer role trying to access any report built on top of the dataset get this error:

Everyone involved has a PRO license, either bought or in a trial.

So while doing some research I saw that RLS might be an issue here so I tried to create a new datset using the same sources and to my surprise that actually works flawlessly.

Then I tried to strip every data source from my original dataset in Power BI Desktop until I was only left with no connections to any external source and basically only some test data entered directly in PowerBI. Like this:

Uploading this dataset and trying out having users with the viewer role access it, still failed.

So I am left with 3 options:

1. Recreate the entire dataset.
(Is there a good way to import every query, all settings and all relationships into a new file somehow?)

2. Someone can help me find out why this error exists in the first place, so that I can fix my old dataset or change settings accordingly.
Obviously I would prefer this router and any help will be very much appreciated.

3. Give everyone contributor+ access to the workspace, which would be very much against company policies, so I would like to avoid that route.

Thanks for the help.

Best Regards,
Till

I was able to fix it by recreating the entire dataset from scratch copying every query, recreating every relationship, recreating all DAX tables, columns and measures and copy and pasting all report pages on the main dataset report.

This took a very long time as my dataset is quite very large (~100MB) and PBI Desktop tends to act very sluggishly when creating new columns or hiding columns, etc.

I hope now one else has to go through this, but if you don't have a choice, this can fix it.

What I tried just now was saving my dataset as a template and then create a new dataset based on that.
The newly created dataset sadly suffers from the same conditions.

Hi Till,

I think this may be because you are running on an "old" Version 1 Workspace. If you go to Workspace Settings, Advanced, do you see the option to Upgrade the workspace ? like this...

If so, upgrading the workspace may solve this problem, or creating a new Workspace and re-publishing the dataset to there may help.

Hope this helps

Stuart

Hey Stuart,

Thanks for trying to help out.

I don't seem to be running an older workspace.
