Hi!
Our company is creating reports in both Excel and Power BI from a connection to our Azure Analysis Services. When creating a Power BI report you connect through a published PBI Dataset (live connection), and when creating an Excel report we're right now connecting through "Get data -> From Database -> From Analysis Services -> *Inserts server name*".
What is the best way to share these Excel reports within the organization? We don't want them to stay on folks local computers.
Our PBI reports are distributed through the PBI Service in different workspaces.
My main option right now is to create a report through "Analyze in Excel" for the PBI Dataset, and then save and share the Excel report through Sharepoint. Are there any other options? Can I share the Excel reports in PBI Service in some way?
Thanks in advance!
Hi @ellac ,
There is another way to share excel report in power bi service.
Gate date -> file -> local file -> choose the excel workbook ->upload
This is the same as sharepoint but you can public it to workspace app. You can refer this article.
OR
You can use the excel connect to the AS directly then share the excel. and use the Onedrive to update it. i do not have Azure AS , so i don't know if it works. you can try.
Excel to connect datasource

Hi. I think Sharepoint is kind of the best way because you have versioning technology. You can also Import an Excel file to Power Bi Service Workspace. We are still talking about an excel connected live connected to dataset for pivot tables. The file pivot tables can be changed by users but those changes will be lost after they close the tab. The file can't be changed by anyone. I have seen it has a "Refresh Now" button, so I assume it can keep updated as long as you still use a live connection to AAS or PBI Dataset.
I hope that helps,
Happy to help!
Thanks for your reply 🙂
You say that I can import an Excel file to PBI Service, but that doesn't work. It says that I need to format the data as a table if I want to import it (because of the AS connection I assume).
Do you know if the "live connection" will be kept to AS if I share Excel files through Sharepoint (and then to PBI Service, which is possible)? I know it will work that way IF I connect through a PBI dataset by "Analyze in Excel" in PBI Service.
Thanks in advance!
