Getting this error - an exception occurred due to an on premise service issue

I have a Power BI report where I am leveraging two data sources

  1. Semantic model from an existing dashboard
  2. Postgre SQL data

I have created some visuals in Power BI desktop but when I am publishing the report, some of the visuals are not appearing giving me an error which message - an exception occurred due to an on premise service issue

Any idea how to resolve this?

Hi @Coach93 I think it occcurs due to connectivity or gateway issues
try these out please

  • Ensure Gateway Configuration:

    • Check if the on-premises gateway is installed and properly configured for PostgreSQL.
    • Verify that the data source is added to the gateway in the Power BI Service.
  • Validate Credentials:

    • Go to Power BI Service > Settings > Manage Gateways.
    • Confirm that credentials for the PostgreSQL data source are valid.
If this post helped please do give a kudos and accept this as a solution
      Thanks In Advance

Hi @Coach93 , Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

Yes, to use both the Semantic Model and PostgreSQL data together in Power BI without issues, you must configure the on-premises data gateway correctly. Ensure that :

  1. The gateway is installed, running, and correctly configured in Power BI Service.
  2. PostgreSQL is added as a data source in the gateway settings.
  3. The authentication credentials are valid in Power BI Service.

Also, please refer below documentation:

Having the same issue. Does the data connection for Semantic model from an existing dashboard have to be mapped in the gateway or can be in Cloud Connections using OAuth 2.0?

Hi , Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

No, you don’t need to map the semantic model to the gateway, it can use cloud connections (OAuth 2.0). But your PostgreSQL connection does need to be set up in the on-premises gateway for the visuals to work after publishing.

Use composite models in Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

On-premises data gateway - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Thank you for replying.

Yeah I am using a cloud connections now and have the PostgreSQL connection in my gateway. It's refreshing fine the workspace (I think it's using my personal account for OAuth 2.0). And I can see data in the report when openning from the workspace.
The issue is - we are using Oqtane to embed Power BI Report on website. However, it seems like the service account is not able to fetch data through the cloud connections - it can fetch data from PostgreSQL but not from the semantic model from from another existing dashboard in another workspace (mapped in claud connections using my own account)

A bit more information, the existing dashboard is from a Power BI App called "Accelo". The dataset is connected through API using my personal account (needs to be my personal account as there's no email for service account). And then in another workspace, I have another report that has a cloud connection to this dataset.

I have tried to give permission to the service principle account in the Accelo database also adding service principle as the workspace admin for both workspaces, but its not resolving the issue.

Thanks Akash, I will check the gateway settings.
So does it means I cannot use both data sources (Semantic & postgre) to create visuals without setting up gateway properly

Hi @Coach93 Yes you would have to set up proper On Prem Gateway
