Filtering dataset in Power BI Service

Hi,

I need to create a report for different departments. End user should able to see to his department reports and able to create new reports using dataset in Power BI service.

But when creating reports he should see only his department data. If i use Row-Level security with contributer permissions, user can see complete dataset in edit view. In edit view user should able to see his department data.

Is this possible in Power BI Service? If yes, how can i achieve this?

Thanks in advance.

Hey @Anonymous ,

this can be achieved by separating the data (the dataset) from the content (reports + dashboard) using two workspaces.

One contains "just" the dataset, I call this workspace data. The 2nd workspace contains the report.

You publish the dataset using a pbix that just creates the data model and publish this report to the data workspace. Don't forget to configure the RLS roles

With a 2nd pbix you create the content, but instead of connecting to the original data source, you are connecting to the Power BI dataset. If you are done with the content creation you publish the pbix to the content workspace.

The 2nd user is not a member of the data workspace, but has build permission on the dataset.

The 2nd user is a contributor in the content workspace, meaning he can create his own reports but RLS is applied.

Hopefully, this provides what you are looking for!

Regards,

Tom
