Favorite Option for Data Sources?

I'd like to know everyones favorite options for data sources. .txt, .csv, SQL, lakehouse, dataverse, lakehouse, copy and paste, doesn't matter. I would love to hear how you chose to get your data to your PBI report, and why you chose that method.

Hi, @MattKonar

There are several data sources that can be used to create a Power BI report. The choice of data source depends on the type of data, the size of the data, and the frequency of data updates. Here are some of the most commonly used data sources for Power BI reports:

  • Excel Spreadsheet: Excel spreadsheets are a popular data source for Power BI reports. They are easy to use and can be updated frequently. You can connect to an Excel spreadsheet stored on your local computer, OneDrive, or SharePoint Online.
  • SQL Server Database: SQL Server databases are another popular data source for Power BI reports. They are ideal for large datasets and can be updated frequently. You can connect to a SQL Server database using DirectQuery or Import.
  • CSV Files: CSV files are a simple and lightweight data source for Power BI reports. They are easy to create and can be updated frequently. You can connect to a CSV file stored on your local computer, OneDrive, or SharePoint Online.
  • Web Services: Web services are a popular data source for Power BI reports. They are ideal for real-time data and can be updated frequently. You can connect to a web service using the Web connector in Power BI.
  • Copy and Paste: You can also copy and paste data directly into Power BI. This is a quick and easy way to create a report, but it is not recommended for large datasets.
  • Other Data Sources: Other data sources that can be used to create a Power BI report include Oracle databases, MySQL databases, PostgreSQL databases, and more.

The choice of data source depends on the specific requirements of your report. For example, if you have a large dataset that needs to be updated frequently, a SQL Server database might be the best option. If you have a small dataset that needs to be updated infrequently, an Excel spreadsheet might be the best option. I hope this helps!
