Fail to upload a Direct query report with data store in Postgres due there's no data gateway

Hi All,

I create a report in composite mode with source from 2 Postgres views - one was in import mode and another in direct query mode.
Everything works fine in Power bi desktop, but when I upload to Power bi service, those visual from direct query mode were all broken with message there's no available gateway. Other visual from import mode works.

Previously I've download an on-premises data gateway (personal mode) but it didn't support direct query,  I ask IT to download on-premises data gateway (standard mode) but it's fail to installed, part of error log in below:

I have a premium Power bi service account but am not the IT admin.

We used to publish the report to internal colleagues who have no Power bi license, we did this for a long time already but it's the 1st time we try use direct query.

Apart from install on-premises data gateway (standard), any other method can be used ?

Thanks a lot for the help !!

Regards,

T

Hello! You can refresh data from Power BI service without a gateway if PostgreSQL is hosted in a way that allows direct connection from Power BI Services on Azure. If your PostgreSQL is hosted on Azure, this is natively supported, but if it is hosted on another environment you would have to check with that provider to see about configuring to allow for direct access. Also, if PostrgeSQL is configured to prevent direct access from the interenet (which if often recommended for security reasons), you'll need the gateway.

Hi Audrey,

Thanks a lot. The postgresql was not in cloud enviornment so we need a gateway.  We'll have ~100 staff (max) viewing the report at once, those user had no Power bi license, tha's why we have premium license.

If this is the situation, did postgrs situated on premises + on-premises data gateway vs. postgres on Azure, which one is better ?

Since yours is on-prem you absolutely need a standard gateway. If you were hosting it on Azure you wouldn't need a gateway. If you were hosting it on some out cloud server, you would need to see with that server if it is possible for direct connection without a gateway (and of course, your IT team).
