Hello,
When I create a Data Warehouse in Fabric is that created in OneLake and stored as Delta Files?
Also how does this compare to creating a database in SQL Server? Is this a replacement for SQL Server or does a Fabric Data Warehouse have a different purpose.
Thank You,
Michael

Hi @mikebi
When you create a Data Warehouse in Fabric, it is indeed created in OneLake, which is a part of the Microsoft Fabric platform. The data is stored in a format that is optimized for analytics and big data scenarios, which can include Delta files. Delta is a storage layer that brings ACID transactions to Apache Spark and big data workloads.
The Fabric Data Warehouse is not necessarily a direct replacement for SQL Server. Instead, it serves a different purpose. Fabric is designed to handle large volumes of data and complex analytics workloads, which may involve big data processing, machine learning, and data streaming. It is more aligned with modern data lakehouse patterns, which combine the benefits of data lakes and data warehouses.
SQL Server is more suited for transactional workloads, traditional business intelligence, and applications that require a highly structured data model and complex transactions.
In summary, the choice between a Fabric Data Warehouse and SQL Server depends on the specific needs of your data workloads. If you are dealing with large-scale analytics and big data, Fabric might be the better choice. For transactional systems and traditional BI, SQL Server might be more appropriate.

Fabric doesn't replace anything to the contrary it contains everything in one unified solution SaaS. It is An end-to-end analytics platform that brings together all the data and analytics tools that organizations need to go from the data lake to the business user.
