Error when try to connect to datamart to SQL server database

Hi,

I get this error when I try to sign in to my organization account and connect to our SQL server.

Am I doing something wrong or is it a temporary error?

Hi, @KasperJ90

Would a similar error occur when creating a dataflow ?
Please recheck your server name and database name and make sure there are no extra characters or any erroneous space in the path.

You can also try use "Basic" authentication to replace 'Organizational'.

I can connect to the SQL server via Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and Power BI desktop. Why is it not working? I need to create the data mart so I have to do it via the webbrowser.

@KasperJ90
Were you able to figure out why you were getting that error?
I am having the same issue now when I used the datamart in order to connect to the SQL database it throws an error.
Please provide me some information if you have figured it out.

Thank you

Hi,
I did not figure it out so I have now made a gateway to acess my data.
This means I am not using the datamart option..

Hi, @KasperJ90

I can create a datamart normally on my side to access the data source of sql server (The authentication method used by the gateway I added is ’windows‘).

If you are sure your credentials are correct, please turn off the firewall and try again.

Hi @v-easonf-msft

Thanks - but why do I need a gateway? I can connect via powerbi desktop and MSSMS without an gateway with "Microsoft authorization"

Hi, @KasperJ90

This is due to safety considerations.Power BI Gateway is a software that is required to access data situated in an on-premises network. Gateway act as a gatekeeper for the on-premises data source. If anyone needs to access on-premises data from a cloud or web-based app, the request goes through the gateway. All the connection requests are attended by the gateway and access is granted based on their authentication and requirements.

Powerbi Desktop and SSMS are native applications, so there is no need to use a gateway when accessing  on-premises data.

What is an on-premises data gateway?

Hi @v-easonf-msft ,

Thanks for your reply. I get the same error when I try to do it in a dataflow as well.

I get the error when I press "sign in" so the server I enter should not matter. I tried both in Edge and Firefox.
I have added a Excel file from Onedrive to my datamart that worked fine.

Hope you can help.
