Entering the workspace through a portal

Hello

we have several user groups. Each user group will be given their own workspace, where they can find the data/reports/dashboards etc. they need and where they can collaborate.
We want to make some kind of a general portal, through which every user enters our domain.
This portal is no more than a URL, that consists of several tiles. Each user group has access to its own tile, as well as some global tiles that may be entered by everybody.
Behind every tile there will be, I think, a direct link to a workspace.

With which tooling is it easy to build and maintain such a portal consisting of tiles?
Is it possible based on authorization only to show those tiles to a user he/she has access to?

Regards
Ron

Example, pushing on a specific tile directs you to the workspace of the user group

Hi Ron,

You put '?chromeless=1' on the end of the Dashboard URL, you can read the release documentation here.

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-weekly-service-update-1124/#chromeless

Yes the URL gets quite long, I guess you could use something like Bit.ly to shorten it ?

If you're new to Power BI, you should be looking at the use of Power BI apps, as these do a lot of what I think you want to do with your end-users.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/end-user-apps

Your users can access these via the Power BI app (NOT the Power BI Desktop app) which can be downloaded from the MIcrosoft store.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/p/power-bi/9nblgggzlxn1#activetab=pivot:overviewtab

This is a read-only app that logs the user into their Power BI account and by default shows the user the Apps they have access to. Users can then run these Apps and not get the "build a report" options they would with Power BI Desktop.

Hope this helps

Stuart

Why don't you use a Dashboard ?

You can set a Dashboard Tile, (text or image) to go to a specific URL when clicked.

Get the URL of the workspaces and put them on the Dashboard tiles as Custom external links, set the "open custom link in same tab" to Yes.

Of course it would be better of these were Workspace APPS, (again they have a URL) then your users won't have to use the Power BI user interface.

There are lots of options here, almost evereything on Power BI service has a URL to locate it.

There are many ways of calling a URL, on a link or button on a Report, or on a Tile in a Dashboard. You really don't need another application, just use what's already there!

Hope this helps

Hai @Burningsuit

I understand what you mean.
But does that meanb that the report  or dashboard, where all the tiles are on, resides in the Power BI service?
That's ok, as long as this landing page has its own specific URL, that it is screen filling (so without any PBI service things) and nothing on the report/dashboard can be changed by end-users. They can only click the tiles that redirect them to their own workspace.

Hi @PowerRon

Yes, the Dashboard or Report resides on the Power BI service.

You can add the parameter ?chromeless=1 to the URL of the Dashboard (or Report) to just render the screen with no other Power BI content. You may find this works best with a Dashboard, as even with ?chromeless=1 a report gets page navigation and a back button at the foot of the page.

Hope this helps

I am rather new to Power BI. We are thinking about a way how end-users can enter the front-end.
By a portal and then workspace we prefer.

So I create a dashboard in the service whit just tiles/images on it. Each image has an URL in its properties.
And then I add the parameter to the URL of the dashboard.

Eventually this dashboard/landing page gets an URL? Suppose this is a very long URL, is it possible to rename that URL so that users know , when I type for instance www.ourBIportal.com they arrive where they want?

Thnx @Burningsuit

You have been very helpful

I will check on the internet if there are ways to change an URL, preferably witg our company as domain.
Maybe a URL of our company can be redirected to the longgggggggggg URl of the dashboard

Ron

Hi Stuart

@Burningsuit

thnx for your answer. As I read an app is a read-only thing. But what If I want users from the same usergroup collaborate and share reports/dashboards in their own workspace? Will an app help with that?

regards

Ron

Hi @PowerRon ,

If you want your users to create reports and dashboard in workspaces then an App won't do it. An App is for consumers who do not want or need to create. If users want to collaborate, building new reports and dashboards then they'll need Contributor or better rights in a workspace.

Hi @PowerRon ,

To my knowledge, this is not supported in Power BI currently.

You can post your idea on Power BI Ideas. It is a place for customers to provide feedback about Power BI.

thnx for your reaction, but I don't think I am looking for embedding. I am more looking for a portal with tiles
