Disable Large Semantic Model Storage Format

Our workspace was on a Fabric trial. The trial has ended and is now a normal Pro workspace. During the trial some of our reports automatically had Large semantic model storage format enabled. Now the reports won't load, but it also won't let us disable Large semantic model storage format. Is there a way to change this?

Hi @ybarsabal ,

Thank you for your question. Power BI does not offer a direct method to disable it once a dataset exceeds Pro limits.

Thank you @lbendlin , As @lbendlin  suggested, you can use the Power BI REST API to update the dataset’s targetStorageMode and revert it to a Pro-supported format.

If the REST API is not an option, consider these alternatives.

  1. If you have access to Premium Per User (PPU) or Premium Capacity, move the dataset there, disable Large Semantic Model Storage Format, and reduce its size. Once optimized, move it back to the Pro workspace.
  2. Use aggregations or summarized data instead of detailed records and enable Incremental Refresh to limit historical data. Once the dataset fits Pro limits, you should be able to disable Large Semantic Model Storage Format.

If a Premium workspace is not available, the REST API method is the most efficient solution. Otherwise, migrating the dataset to Premium, optimizing it, and moving it back to Pro is the best manual approach.

If there is any post helps, then please consider Accept it as the solution  to help the other members find it more quickly.

This is probably the solution, but we ended up turning on Fabric temporarily to give us the option to disable large semantic model storage format.
