Deleted semantic model and is there a way restoring old URL if Republished

Hi

Appreciate any thoughts.

I deleted the semantic model in PBI Service, but got to know that it is being used to generate some excel reports by business users. Is there a way I can restore the old URL? I tried publishing with the same name, but the URL got changed.

Hi @msft-cap

Once a semantic model is deleted from the Power BI Service, unfortunately, its original URL cannot be restored even if you republish the model using the same name. Power BI assigns a new unique ID to each published dataset, which results in a different URL.

This means that any Excel files or reports connected via the old URL will no longer function unless updated with the new connection. If you have a backup of the .pbix file, republishing it is your best option, but you'll need to inform users to update their connections accordingly. Going forward, consider using deployment pipelines or version control to help manage and safeguard important assets.

No, there is no way to restore to the prior GUID.  Better get your Management Of Change procedures running.
