Hi,
Is it yet possible to connect PBI Premium tabular model as a linked server in MS SQL, similar to what is possible with SSAS? I've tested but it appears as if the drivers haven't been updated to match recent improvements to Premium datasets & xmla endpoints.

Hi @forefrontbi
You cannot get data from MSSQL in Service directly , you need connect to MSSQL with Direct Query mode in Desktop and create report in Desktop .Then publish the report to Service .
(1)Connect to SQL with Direct Query mode in Power BI Desktop .
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/connectors/sqlserver
(2)Configure a standard on-premises data gateway .
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/data-integration/gateway/service-gateway-install
(3)Add a SQL datasource in Manage gateways and set scheduled refresh in dataset settings .
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-gateway-enterprise-manage-sql
When you finish the steps above , you can refresh the data from on-premises SQL directly .

Hi @forefrontbi
You would need to use the gateway and as far as I know you would need to connect directly to the MS SQL Database.
Check out the November 2025 Power BI update to learn about new features.
