Build Access - App Shared - General Questions

Hi community!

I have two questions reggarding "Building Access" in one specific scenario.

I proceed to list the contexts, hope you can orient me:

Scenario 1: Build Access - App Denying Building Permissions

  • I published an App in Power Bi Service and chose the option “Don’t allow users to connect to the app’s datasets using Build permissions”.
  • However, I want to grant “Build permissions” to “a few users” to a specific semantic model (those users are not part of my Workspace).

Question 1: In that scenario, Can I make an exception for those users from the app? (so that they can connect to my datset in since the app), Or what is the best strategy in that scenario? Is the only way to give them “Build Permissions” directly from my Workspace report?

Question 2: Once I've provided "Build Access", all the reports they create based on my "parten semantic model"  will be visible to they're audience? (even if their reports are in a different Workspace)

I mean, the users of "their report" (that was created using my report data) won't need access to my "Parent report" to see the "Child report"?

Any comment will be highly appreciated!!

Hi @Miguel_Rojo  ,

Question1:Build Permissions for Specific Users

You can't grant exceptions via the app if “Don’t allow users to connect…” is enabled. Instead, go to the dataset settings in your Workspace and manually add Build permissions for those users.

Question 2: Visibility of Derived Reports

Yes, reports created using your dataset will be visible to their audience, and the audience won’t need access to your parent dataset, as long as the child reports are in a separate workspace with proper permissions.
