Best way to move a connection in a report from personal mode to on-premises mode

Hello all,

I am relatively new to PBI.  At work it was recently pointed out to me that some of my data is connected to personal mode rather than to the on-premises Gateway.  I have done a lot of searching but cannot find a way that I understand, that will help me move these connections.  (This is probably due to my own technical limitations rather than the helpful posters).

Things I have tried:

(1)  There doesn not seem to be a button on the Gateway page in the app to change the connection.

(2)  If there is a duplicate path to a folder that is connected to the on-premises gateway, I have tried to change the filepath in the advanced editor in the PBI report.  All that happens is that the path name is rejected.  For example:

In one report I have a connection called:

Source = Folder.Files("\\XXXXXXXX.XX.corplan.net\jnls_production\Production Reports\Journal Status Report\2023")

In the app this  connects using a personal mode

However, there is also an on-premises connection to that drive

I cannot find a way to switch from the top connection to the bottom connection in the app.

I went to the report and in the advanced editor changed the name to reflect the difference in names between the two connections:

Source = Folder.Files("\\XXXXXXXX.XX.corplan.net\jnls_production\Production Reports\Journal Status Report\2023")

to

Source = Folder.Files("\\XXXXXXXX.XX.corplan.net\jnls_production drive\Production Reports\Journal Status Report\2023")

It didn't like this.

Please can someone let me know what I should be doing to change the connection?

Also, if you have time, can you let me know how to ensure I don't connect to the personal mode again?  I do not know enough about this area to know why the connection was made/became a personal one in the first place so I cannot stop myself repeating this mistake.

with many thanks for your help.

Hi @ClaraGlocke ,

If I understand correctly, the issue is that you want to move a connection from personal mode to on-premises mode. Please try the following methods and check if they can solve your problem:

1.Make sure that the on-premises data gateway is installed.

2.Navigate to the workspace, go to the semantic model settings.

3.In the settings, select the Gateway connections.

4.Change the connection from personal mode to on-premises data gateway.

5.Apply and save changes.

Looking forward to your reply.

Best Regards,

Hello Wisdom Wu,

I am really sorry for the late response.  I didn't get an email alert so thought no-one had answered.  I really appreciate the time you took to help me.

Unfortunately, in the instances I am trying to solve some are connected to the on-premises gateway and others are not.  I have two boxes, one for Gateway connections and one for Cloud connnections.  However, there are Sharepoint connections in both lists so I am not clear what is happening.

Thanks,

best wishes,

Claire
