Why is my background image not appears as a thumbnail. Why so? Shouldn't the image be in full.

Change under Canvas background from Image Fit - Normal to Fill
Also make sure your image BEFORE importing matches your canvas size.
The default 16:9 is a height of 720 by 1280 pixels.
