Automatically Change Slicer/Page Filter

Hello,

I was given a report idea yesterday where the goal is to display data on multiple projects automatically to a TV screen, one at a time, so that our employees can see the status of each project. The problem is, as new projects start and old projects finish, we want the projects that it shuffles through to automatically update. So essentially we would show data for Project 1, Project 2, and Project 3, but if Project 2 finishes today and Project 4 starts today, then tomorrow we would like to show data for Project 1, Project 3, and Project 4 without having to manually change the report each time. That leads to a few questions:

1. Is there any way to automatically change a page slicer or filter every ~60 seconds so that it shows the next project?

2. Is there any way to change the projects that it shuffles through as we start and finish them? I was thinking of parameters in a measure, but I am not sure on this.

3. Has anyone tried to display a PBI report like this where it automatically switches the selected data?

Hopefully all of that makes sense, but I can provide more details or examples if needed.

Thank you!

Hi, @shanerolle

Yes, it is possible to automatically change a page slicer or filter every ~60 seconds so that it shows the next project. You can use the "Sync Slicers" feature in Power BI to synchronize the slicers across multiple pages. You can also use the "Bookmark" feature to create a bookmark for each project and then use the "Play Axis" visual to automatically switch between the bookmarks every 60 seconds.

Hi @shanerolle ,

Really interesting use case here. Yes, I believe you can do this in my custom Power BI digital signage app that I've built called Displagent, it makes it easy for you to build slideshows for your Power BI artifacts as well as display them on TVs. Similar to the other answer in here, I think Report Bookmarks is what you want to use here.

When you build Report Slideshows in Displagent, you have the option to build them piece-by-piece, picking from both Report Pages/Tabs as well as Report Bookmarks.

So, for example, you could build a slideshow like the following:

  • Tab 1, 40 seconds
  • Report Bookmark 1 (specific slicer selections, etc.), 60 seconds
  • Report Bookmark 2 (other slicer selections, etc.), 55 seconds
  • ... and so on

Feel free to start a trial or message me if you have any questions.

My app and the other answer in here are the only ways I think of to accomplish what you want, unless you build a custom app using Power BI Embedded and the Power BI Javascript SDK.
