On-Prem Data Gateway

Hi folks,

I have a question about data gateway, really appreciate for all your help!!! I have an on-prem SQL Server on Server A, and i will connect to that SQL server from Power BI for reporting then publishing it to Service. Question is, where do i install the standard on-prem gateway since that gateway will also share for other users.

* Do i install it directly on Server A.

* Or, if I install it on Server B, will I still can connect to Server A using the gateway on Server B.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Hi @bao_phan ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

The best practice for setting up the On-Premises Data Gateway depends on your setup. You can install it on Server A (SQL Server) for lower latency, but this may affect performance if the SQL Server is heavily used. Alternatively, installing the gateway on Server B (a separate machine) works as long as Server B has network access to Server A. This setup helps distribute workloads and ensures that Server A isn’t impacted. For shared use, it's recommended to install the gateway on a dedicated, stable machine with consistent network connectivity to both Power BI Service and SQL Server.
