Shared data sources on premise

How is it possible to setup single data sources on the on premise report server so that our reports don't have to have explicit data source?

Not officially possible with PBI type reports for now.

it works well with the cloud version and the on premise gateway

Well, someone had the idea of Cloud-First, Mobile-First. For sure they executed on the Cloud-First and made a lot of customers unhappy, not sure about the latter!
