Report Server Locking my Windows Account regularly

Good Morning,

My Windows Login Account keeps getting locked, and our IT department have been alerted that its due to the Power BI Report Server...

I was thinking it may be due to having changed my Windows password quite recently, but I think the locking problem was occurring a short while before this even.

I have deleted the scheduled refreshes from all my dashboards, but this made no difference. When I experimented with the manual refreshes those succeeeded, yet the locking is still occurring (in spite of scheduled refreshes being removed)

IT department have created a new Service Account for me, if that will be helpful.

Kindly advise

Hi @F_Reh ,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft Fabric Community.

This type of account lockout issue can happen when Power BI Report Server or related services continue trying to authenticate using outdated credentials, especially after a password change.

Possible causes:
The issue may be occurring because reports on the Power BI Report Server are still using stored credentials tied to your old Windows password, even if scheduled refreshes have been removed. Reports configured to use Windows integrated security may also be relying on cached credentials.

If any shared data sources are still using your old credentials, they can continue attempting authentication in the background. Additionally, other systems or services like mapped drives, Outlook, mobile devices, or background applications could be trying to use outdated credentials.

In some cases, the Report Server may be running under your personal Windows account, which can also lead to lockouts if your password has changed.

Next Steps:
You should review each report in the Report Server web portal by opening the report, selecting "Manage," and checking the data source settings. If stored credentials are being used, update them or replace them with the new service account credentials provided by your IT team.

It’s advisable to switch all data sources and scheduled tasks to use the service account instead of your personal Windows account to avoid future issues.

Open the Windows Credential Manager on your machine and remove any saved credentials that may still be trying to authenticate with your old password.

If the Report Server itself is running under your user context, your IT team may need to reconfigure it to run under a service account instead.

Let us know if the issue persists after these steps.

Hope this helps. Please reach out for further assistance.
