PowerBI Report Server Deployment advice

Hi Everybody,

I wanted advice on the deployment setup we are using for a use case we are developing:

- PowerBI Reports need to connect to on premises SQL Server

- These PowerBI reports then need to be accessed over the public internet

Current Deployment Setup:

- PowerBI Report Server and PowerBI Destkop (Report Server) on an on premises Windows VM which has access to the on premises SQL Server

I want to understand whether we would need the PowerBI Gateway or connection to the SQL Server might just be done through the PowerBI Report Server? Also, how do I make these reports available in the public domain? Any links to tutorials or docs will be appreciated

Thanks.

    Hi hellodfkh ,

    1. On-Premises Gateway used for Power BI Service, you need not gateway

    2. Please try to use Microsoft Entra application proxy to connect to Power BI Report Server. Through this integration, users who are away from the corporate network can access their Power BI Report Server and Reporting Services reports from their client browsers and be protected by Microsoft Entra ID.

For more details, you could read related document: Configure Power BI Report Server with Microsoft Entra application proxy - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
